Warning! MK808B copy.

Postby deadhp1 » Wed Jan 02, 2013 2:04 pm

This is a warning that there is an MK808B copy floating around on the internet.
It uses the Mediatek wifi/bluetooth chipset instead of the RK902 used in the official MK808B.
It is also limited to a maximum speed of 1.2GHz.

If you use the MK808B firmware you will lose wifi and bluetooth.
So for now I am stating that the firmwares supplied in here should ONLY be used for the MK808B purchased through geekbuying.

So far the MX1 firmware is the closest, but will not work properly due the "copied" MK808B not having the same power controller.
There is no source code available for the Mediatek wifi/bluetooth, so I cannot make a custom kernel for it.
The only thing that can be done is to hound the seller you purchased the copy from for an official firmware.

If you open your MK808B and it looks like the below picture then you have the official MK808B:

top2.jpg

If your MK808B looks like the below picture then you have a copy:

thx very much for the info!

btw. what´s the copy and what´s the original in the case of these sticks i wonder, who was the first who designed the ug802/mk808/mk808b ?
i know there are retailers to brand their sticks but what´s the original ?
And where are the kernelsources :) ? *just kidding on that*

Since it looks like you still have your original firmware I can help you rip the kernel out of it!
First off you need to be rooted for this to work.
Using terminal emulator enter the following commands:
Code: Select all
su
cat /proc/mtd

This will give a list of where things are stored.
For example my kernel is stored on mtd1, my system.img is actually known as backup and stored on mtd4.
Sometimes backup is filled with garbage, sometimes it actually has the system.img. It really depends on how they built the firmware.
So now we'll use simple commands to rip these files to the internal sd card partition.
Code: Select all
cat /dev/mtd/mtd1 > /sdcard/kernel.img
cat /dev/mtd/mtd4 > /sdcard/backup.img

Hope that helps!

backup might not be what you need.
I've been testing out the commands on my MK808B with rk903.
after mounting the backup.img it didn't contain anything that I could use.
system contained all the system files from system.img

you won't have working wifi like that.
You need to have the kernel modules and bluetooth setup stuff that's in the system you have.
You might be able to use the imito system, but who know's if it will work.
I wish I could test this for you guys, but I don't have the same mk808b :o(

if you upload a rom with this kernel , i think someone can test it ... anyway people who already burn the rom for MK808 on MK808B with mediatek chipset ... have nothing to loose because the wifi and bluetooth don't work, only solution for them now is to use a usb-lan.

thnx

I've bought a MK808B from geekbuying, but it seems to be "the original" or "the official". So nobody seems to know, what he will get.
So I will try the firmware from XDA. later.

Is there any way to tell you have a fake without breaking this thing open? For example, is there a difference in what it says in the About Screen in settings? If I *have* to break it open, just how do I do that?
